MUSIC THEATRE OF WICHITA

2010 Apprentice Program

Download Application Here

Music Theatre of Wichita is currently in its 39th summer season. Nationally recognized as one of the nation’s finest summer musical theatres, MTW each year presents five lavish, full-scale Broadway musicals in the 2100-seat Century II Concert Hall in downtown Wichita.

Our backstage and onstage personnel represent a cross-section of some of the most talented theatre artists working in the field today. Major designers and directors from New York and other theatrical centers work hand in hand with the Music Theatre Technical Staff and Apprentices.

Several elements of our productions will be designed and built by our Music Theatre Technical Staff, which is assembled each summer from hundreds of applicants from around the country.

APPRENTICE PROGRAM

Music Theatre of Wichita has been widely praised for its work with young people. The most unique program is our Apprentice Program, which introduces interested high school students into the world of the professional theatre. Our apprentices (who must be 16 years old, or about to enter their sophomore year in high school) work hand in hand with our professional staff in all aspects of theatrical production: stage management, lighting, set construction, props, costumes, sound, and (to a limited extent) performance. There is no payment for apprentices, but neither are there admissions fees or any educational costs.

Apprentices may work on one show (a 2-week commitment) or on several. In addition to working on the shows, apprentices receive training from industry professionals, and take part in seminars and workshops with all of the guest performers, directors and designers. This program has proven to be the first step for many artists who are now well-known professionals, and Music Theatre of Wichita is proud of its many former apprentices who are now working on Broadway and in television and film. To be a part of the Apprentice Program in the summer is to put in long hours doing creative work, and it has proven to be a very rewarding activity for young people who have a strong interest in the world of entertainment. There is no other program in the country quite like it.

Note: We enjoy having our company reflect the cultural
and racial diversity that we celebrate in our country.
People from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

DATES:
Construction, Paint and Costumes will all begin around May 19. Apprentices join the program after they have finished school for the year, and dates are flexible.

SHOPS:
All shops are located in the Century II Complex. They are air-conditioned, separate spaces, and are readily accessible to the stage of the Concert Hall. The paint shop includes a 26’ x 54’ motorized paint frame.
